Somada Micronutrient Guide

Two sets of numbers. Two different jobs.

Set 1 — The label RDI · FSANZ

FSANZ exists to make food labels consistent and comparable. To do that it uses one reference value per nutrient for everyone aged four and over — the number behind every "% Daily Intake" you see on a pack in Australia. One number for all adults is a compromise by design, and several FSANZ values pre-date the modern evidence review.

Set 2 — The life-stage NRV · NHMRC

The Nutrient Reference Values are built from research and data, reviewed by the NHMRC, and set separately for each sex and life stage — because a menstruating woman, a pregnant woman, a teenager and a man do not have the same requirements. This is the number we think you should actually read.

Neither set is wrong — they answer different questions. Iron shows the gap at its widest: the label's 12 mg sits half-way between a man's 8 mg and a menstruating woman's 18 mg, so the same "% Daily Intake" flatters food for men and understates it for women. That is why this guide shows both numbers side by side.

Nutrient FSANZ Note

Why our label can say 100% of the RDI — and still be 67% of what you may need

Australian labels use one FSANZ reference number for everyone aged four and over. For iron that number is 12 mg — and a full serve of our Iron Blend provides 12 mg, so the label reads 100%. But the research-based NRVs are set per life stage, and they tell a more honest story about the same serve:

Label (FSANZ adult)

100%

of the 12 mg RDI

Women under 50

67%

of an 18 mg NRV

Pregnancy

44%

of a 27 mg NRV

Men

150%

of an 8 mg NRV

The same 12 mg is a full labelled day for a man, two-thirds of a day for a menstruating woman, and well under half in pregnancy. Every brand's label works this way — we'd rather show you the number that's true for you than only the one that flatters the pack.
